Discover the Berlin districts of Grunewald and Charlottenburg during a relaxed and interesting bike tour with a local guide!
The villa colony Grunewald was established around 1900 at the instigation of Bismarck. Many (especially Jewish) prominent personalities lived and still live here, among others Walter Rathenau, Max Planck, Alfred Kerr, the Bonhoeffer family, Gerhard Hauptmann, Samuel Fischer, Franz and Robert Mendelssohn, the Ullstein brothers, Max Reinhardt, Lion Feuchtwanger, later Harald Juhnke, Romy Schneider, Hildegard Knef, Sabine Christiansen, Arthur Brauner, Joschka Fischer. The glamorous side of Jewish life in Grunewald is - as so often in Berlin - contrasted by places of horror in the same place: Koenigsallee is where Reich Foreign Minister Rathenau was assassinated in 1920, and Platform 17 is where the first Jewish deportation train left for the Lodz ghetto in 1941.
After a short round trip through the Wilmersdorf district of Grunewald, you will cycle along Kurfürstendamm to Lietzensee and stop for coffee at a lakeside café. On Berlin's more than 20 km long east-west axis, here called Bismarckstraße, you will reach the German Opera, Karl-August-Platz, via Pestalozzistrasse to the endpoint Bahnhof Zoo.
