The first curiosity of the city awaits you already at the meeting point: In front of the city hall in the middle of the fountain is enthroned a statue of Hercules. Your guide will tell you what brought the Greek hero to the city of German Romanticism. Learn more interesting background information about Heidelberg, for example, why there is a depiction of a pretzel on the Heiliggeistkirche, why this church has two entrances right next to each other, and why you should definitely shake hands with the "Bridge Monkey". The course of the picturesque little streets of Heidelberg's Old Town still bears witness to the medieval layout of the city, but the buildings are mostly built in the Baroque style, because after destruction by wars and devastating fires, the houses were each simply rebuilt on their original site. Find out which house was the only one to survive the great city fire of 1693 and what connection the French poet Victor Hugo had with the Renaissance building. Find out why Goethe, Martin Luther, Mark Twain and William Turner also once visited the city.
