Abbey de Montmajour in the countryside of Arles was founded in 948 by Benedictine monks and features heritage from different eras.
Here you can explore a necropolis dug directly into the rock, along with a cave chapel from the 11th century (the “Ermitage Saint Pierre”), the 12th-century Sainte-Croix chapel, and a 12th-century church.
Producing many drawings at the abbey from 1888 to 1889, Van Gogh was one of the artists fascinated by Montmajour. The work Ascension by Alain Kirili for the abbey choir is a homage to his use of thick layers of color.
Montmajour Abbey offers panoramic views of the Alpilles mountains and the Crau Plain where you can see horses and bulls grazing the fields.
