Western South Dakota delivers a wide variety of spectacular landscapes, from the prairies grassland and rock formations of the Badlands National Park, through to the mountains, canyons and forests of the Black Hills, and the gigantic carvings at Mount Rushmore.

Learn why Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial were built in South Dakota, what they represent, and the vision behind the projects. This region was once the very edge of the wild west, many people came here seeking their fortune. The tour will take you see one of the world’s richest gold mining operations at the Homestake Mine. You will also pass through flourishing nature on the Custer Wildlife Loop Road, where you might watch deer, antelopes, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elks, coyotes, and buffaloes.

On the Wyoming side of the border, you can spot Devils Tower the first US National Monument, and a site of spiritual importance for Native American to this day.

The Black Hills Loop driving distance is about 90 miles. The driving distance between Rapid City and the Badlands National Park entrance is about 95 miles one way. The driving distance Rapid City and Devils Tower (WY), via Spearfish Canyon is about 150 miles one way
