Depart from the city of Salzburg, pass the Untersberg Mountain - a place steeped in legends and myths - and cross into Germany via the old border crossing through the alpine valley to reach Obersalzberg. Little is left to be seen of the Third Reich except the Eagle's Nest perched atop its summit, which you might spot as you ascend the lower part of the mountain.
It is inside this mountain, however, that the real adventure unfolds. Donning traditional miner's clothes, you'll venture into the 500-year-old mine by train and hear intriguing stories and facts about this underground world. There is nothing to fear as you slide down into the grottoes using the same slides that hundreds of miners have used before. A brief visit to the village of Berchtesgaden before returning to Salzburg rounds off your tour.
