Bolzano and Renon tour with panoramic train ride
Excursions & day trips

Lake Garda - Bolzano and Renon tour with panoramic train ride

South Tyrol is the most un-Italian part of Italy. It's not just the Alpine location that sets it apart but its languages, architecture and culture. This excursion mixes the best of both worlds with time in the regional capital, Bolzano, and scenery-rich train ride through the Renon plateau. Martin, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The railway was first opened in 1907, and originally incorporated a cog section ascending 1000 metres from Bolzano, but in 1966 that section was replaced by the original cablecar.'Bolzano, or Bozen as German-speaking locals call it, is the elegant and prosperous capital of South Tyrol. Its star attraction is the Archaeological Museum, home to Ötzi the Iceman – a naturally mummified 5,300-year-old Copper Age shepherd. You can choose to visit the museum during your free time in the city – entrance not included – or you can stroll the handsome streets and piazzas of the city, browse the shops or try some local specialities like apple strudel. And on the next leg of the trip, you'll hop into a cable car in Bolzano and ascend to the Renon plateau in a matter of minutes. Then it's time for the narrow-gauge train journey though pastoral landscapes and pretty villages. A 20-minute walk away through nature are the plateau's famous earth pyramids – well worth checking out. These bizarre pillars can reach heights of up to 30 metres, and while one pyramid vanishes, further up the same slope, nature is already forming a new one.

Get ready to fall in love with dream destinations and find out the best things to do in Italy.

10 Things to do in Italy

1. Visit the iconic attractions of Rome

The Italian capital is an open-air museum, a must-see for art and history lovers. Visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon to delve into the city’s deep-rooted heritage. Don’t miss Vatican City where you can take in the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of St Peter’s Basilica, stroll through the art galleries of the Vatican Museums, and get a good look at the Sistine Chapel. Stroll through the historic centre, check out iconic squares like Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna, and, of course, indulge in some local cuisine.

2. Check out Florence’s Renaissance art

Florence is the heart of the Renaissance, with an unmatched art scene. Visit the Uffizi Gallery, where you can check out Botticelli, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci’s works. Florence Cathedral, with its revolutionary dome designed by Brunelleschi, is an architectural masterpiece you won’t want to miss. Then, wander across the Ponte Vecchio, this bridge dating back to Medieval times, and stop by the historic Boboli Gardens.

3. Navigate the canals of Venice

Venice is a one-of-a-kind city, known for its intricate network of canals, elegant monuments and artisan shops. Start your visit in St Mark’s Square, where you’ll find St Mark’s Basilica and the Campanile. Continue to Doge’s Palace, home to extravagant interiors and artistic masterpieces. Don’t forget to take a romantic gondola ride along the Grand Canal. If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, head over to the Cannaregio and Dorsoduro districts for some spritz and cicchetti, the cocktail and pre-dinner snacks essential to Venetian aperitivo culture.

4. Discover the history and culture of Naples

Naples, with its ancient culture and traditions, is packed with must-see attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Start by wandering through the historic centre, where you’ll find narrow streets and intricately decorated Baroque churches. The National Archaeological Museum is not to be missed, either – it’s home to one of the most significant collections of Roman Art. Don’t miss out on a trip to Mount Vesuvius and check out the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

5. Go shopping in Milan

Milan isn’t just the capital of fashion and design, but it’s also brimming with Insta-worthy corners and places to uncover. Start with a visit to the Duomo and climb its terraces for a panoramic view of the city. Then, take a leisurely stroll through the Brera district to see its renowned Pinacoteca. Don't miss a trip to the iconic Teatro alla Scala, and afterward, venture into the modern districts like Citylife and Piazza Gae Aulenti. For shopping, indulge in luxury at the Quadrilatero della Moda or hunt for deals along Buenos Aires and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

6. Recharge your batteries at Lake Como

With postcard-perfect landscapes and a relaxed atmosphere, Lake Como is a must-see if you’re visiting northern Italy. Here, you’ll find historic villas like Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello as well as the traditional villages of Bellagio and Varenna. Plus, you can cast off on a boat ride on the lake, before savouring the local cuisine at one of the lakeside restaurants. And, if you like walking, you’ll have plenty of mountain hikes and lakeside trails to get stuck into.

7. Stop by the Villages of Cinque Terre

This UNESCO-rated area includes five villages perched on the sea – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Hike the panoramic trails that connect the villages, nestled between the sea and mountains, passing through vineyards and perched farmhouses. Be sure to try the local culinary specialties, including pesto and seafood.

8. Take a vacation in Sicily

In Sicily, you can find everything from sandy beaches and archaeological sites to nature excursions and art-filled cities. Visit Palermo, with its lively markets and Baroque churches, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, and the Baroque cities of the Val di Noto. Climb Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, and then relax on the beaches of Taormina and Cefalù.

9. Visit the Sassi of Matera

Nestled in a landscape that feels almost otherworldly, Matera is a must-visit on your Italian road trip. Renowned for its Sassi, ancient dwellings carved into the rock dating back to prehistoric times, the historic centre of Matera is truly unique, offering a glimpse into Italy's history. Wander through the rock churches, some dating back to the 9th century, and take in the panoramic views of the city from the Belvedere.
