Discover the stunning Miramare Castle, enchantingly located on the promontory facing the Gulf of Trieste, the most north-easterly city in Italy.
Miramare is the magnificent vestige of the Austrian Empire: the original furniture and decorations date back to 1856, when the Viennese architect Carl Junker started to build the palace desired by archduke Maximilian of Habsburg.
The palace later became the residence of Duke Amedeo da Aosta and his family until early 1943. During their stay, modernity moved into the castle with electricity, two elevators, a neon lighting system, running water, phone lines, and central heating.
The building is surrounded by a spectacular park of 22 hectares overlooking the sea, characterized by an impressive variety of plants, many of which were specially chosen by the archduke during his travels around the world.
The highlight of the park is the Castelletto, the "small castle" used by the royal couple during the construction of the main one, and later "prison" for Carlota, wife of the archduke, who was said to suffer from mental illness after the murder of her husband in Mexico.
