Do this because

  • Experience live sumo matches at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo
  • Discover the ranks of wrestlers, how they train, and where they live
  • Visit sumo-related landmarks and deepen your knowledge about sumo
  • Explore the world of sumo with a local guide who will answer all your questions
  • Try a dish eaten by sumo wrestlers with the Chanko-nabe dinner option

What to expect

Embark on an intimate small-group tour limited to 10 travellers and led by a knowledgeable sumo guide. Start with a 2-hour guided walking tour of Ryogoku, followed by Grand Sumo Tournament bouts in the arena at 3.00 pm and Chanko-nabe dinner (sumo wrestlers meal) from 6.00 pm.

In the order box, you can select the ticket option that suits you best. Book all 3 activities (Walking tour + Sumo bouts + Chanko-nabe dinner) to learn all about Sumo, or choose your favourite mix of activities: Sumo bouts + Chanko-nabe dinner, Walking tour + Sumo bouts, or Sumo bouts only.

During the walking tour, your guide will show you the historical landmarks in Ryogoku sumo town: Sumo Stables, Nomi no Sukune Sumo Shrine, Sumida Hokusai Museum, Kyu-Yasuda Japanese Garden, Japanese Sword Museum, Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, and Ryōgoku Edo NOREN.

The guide will then walk you through the sumo arena and show you murals, championship prizes, the Sumo museum, photos of Yokozunas from the Edo period, and much more on the way to your seat on the second floor. Your expert guide will also provide commentary throughout the sumo bouts.

After the bouts in the arena, the tour concludes with a traditional Chanko-nabe dinner, the ideal way to fully embrace the sumo culture. Your guide will take you to a reserved local restaurant serving very nutritious food called Chanko, designed to help sumo wrestlers gain weight and build muscle.

Important to know

Know in advance:

  • You will be seated in either Chair B or Chair C on the balcony. Chair B offers a few advantages over Chair C: it's closer to the ring, slightly larger, and has softer cushioning for added comfort. The seating map in the photo section shows their exact locations
  • Balcony seats provide more comfort, as you will be seated in a chair at all times. By contrast, first-floor seating consists of box-style areas where four people sit together on a 1.3m x 1.3m flat square with cushions
  • The tour operator offers seating in chairs on the balcony level of the arena. If you prefer to stay on the first floor, please note that seating there is on a flat floor with no chairs available
  • Infants aged 0 to 3 years can join the tour free of charge. However, please inform the tour operator in advance of the number of infants attending if you plan to bring any
