Small Group Tour of Gozo with Victoria and Ggantija Temples
Excursions & day trips

Malta - Small Group Tour of Gozo with Victoria and Ggantija Temples

Gozo and Malta are separated only by a narrow channel, but the differences are eye-catching. Gozo is greener, more laidback and sparsely populated. Get the lowdown on the island on this adults-only small group tour with visits to the Victoria Citadel, Ta'Pinu Basilica and Dwejra Bay. Yohanna, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The mosaics at Ta'Pinu are a recent addition, dating from 2017. They feature 20 mysteries of the rosary mounted on four circular walls in what had previously been an unsightly car park.'After a short trip by ferry to the island, you'll head to Qala Point first, for unobstructed views over the Maltese Archipelago. Then, it's off to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ggantija Temples, which pre-date the Egyptian pyramids. The historic theme continues at the medieval Citadel of Victoria, the island's capital. Yohanna says, ‘Victoria was originally named Rabat, however, to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1887, its name was changed. You'll see lots of British influence here, due to it 164 years under British rule.'Next up is a visit to the salt pans, to see how salt is harvested on the island. After stopping for a lunch made from locally sourced ingredients at a traditional Gozitan restaurant, you'll head to Ta'Pinu Basilica, where you can grab some Insta-perfect snaps. Last but not least, you'll visit the impressive geographic features in and around Dwejra Bay – the Fungus Rock and the Inland Sea lagoon.

Things to do in Malta

Malta is a small country big on history, culture and natural beauty. With sun-splashed beaches, fishing villages and intriguing architecture, Malta, Gozo and Comino - the three main islands of the archipelago - attract many holidaymakers every year, making it a perfect destination for beach days and cultural visits alike. From the historic centre of Valletta, a Unesco World Heritage Site, to the Blue Lagoon of Comino, there is something for everyone in this fascinating island destination.

Top six things to do in Malta

1. Explore Valletta

Valletta, the country's capital, is a must-see. Its historic centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is characterised by Baroque architecture, colourful gardens and quaint streets full of cafes and cute little shops. Be sure to visit St John's Co-Cathedral, home to Caravaggio's famous ‘Beheading of St John’, and the Grand Master's Palace, which also houses a museum.

2. Discover the city of M'dina

Known as the ‘Silent City’, M’dina is the ancient Maltese capital and home to several interesting historical sites. Surrounded by monumental medieval walls, the city is home to dazzling palaces, churches and an ancient network of streets. Stroll through the quiet lanes, taking in the picturesque surroundings, and don't forget to stop at the 17th-century St Paul's Cathedral and Tas-sur Square for a splendid panorama.

3. Gozo's Ggantija Temples

Wherever you decide to base yourself, Gozo's Ggantija Temples are a must-see attraction. These megalithic structures, older than the pyramids of Egypt, exude a mysterious charm and tell us about the country's prehistoric past. The two temples, shaped like the female form, stand side by side and were the scene of religious and ceremonial rituals. Our advice is to visit them on a guided tour in order to fully appreciate them.

4. Sail to the Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is one of Malta's natural wonders, located off the south coast of the island. To explore this famous formation it is best to take a boat, which sails through a system of sea caves to the Blue Grotto in about 40 minutes. Don't forget to take your camera with you, to capture the luminous turquoise that gives this natural spectacle its name.

5. Visit Marsaxlokk

The quaint fishing village of Marsaxlokk is famous for its small, colourful boats, known as luzzus. Sunday is the ideal day to visit the village, the atmosphere is lively and the renowned fish market is held, with the catch of the day sold by the fishermen. Don't miss the chance to try some delicious typical dishes in the seafront restaurants.

6. Relax in the Blue Lagoon of Comino

Comino is a small island with a great reputation for its beautiful beaches and azure sea. Here you will also find the Blue Lagoon, a bay with incredibly transparent water, ideal for swimming, snorkelling or diving. With its white sandy beach and beautiful natural surroundings, this cove is the perfect place to spend a day of pure relaxation.
