What to expect

This is a short but instructive walking tour, which shows you the most historical and important sites of the old city centre of Bratislava.

This tour will bring you to the Opera House and the house of Reduta. You will then continue to Main Square, passing by the Old Town Hall. On Franciscan Square you will see the oldest building of Bratislava: the Franciscan Church. You will then walk along Biela Street and Michalska Street where you will see Michael's Gate. You will then pass by historical buildings and palaces in Venturska Street and Panska Street. The city tour finishes at St. Martin's Cathedral.

Your guide will start by telling you the history of one of the youngest capital cities and states of Europe, Bratislava and Slovakia. You will be told about the ancient history of Slovakia, when the old Slavs, the predecessors of modern Slovaks, inhabited Slovakia and created the Great Moravia Empire, until the times when Slovakia was part of the Austro – Hungarian Empire.

Hear the legends from the times when Bratislava was the capital city of the Hungarian Kingdom, and Hungarian kings and queens were crowned here. The stories will continue to the time of the first Czechoslovakian state and WWII, at the time of the controversial Slovak war state. You will also hear about the dark times of Communism and the hope which brought the Velvet revolution. The result of Velvet revolution was an independent Slovakia, which has since 2004 become a member of the European Union.
