About Casa Batlló

About Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands out as one of Barcelona's most striking architectural marvels. This modernist building, a masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí, is a perfect example of the spirit of Catalan Modernism with its flowing lines and colourful mosaics. It is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona.

The house was remodelled between 1904 and 1906, commissioned by textile industrialist Josep Batlló i Casanovas. Gaudí's imaginative design transformed the original conventional house, built in 1875, into a work of art that draws in thousands of visitors each year. The facade, decorated with a rainbow of broken ceramic tiles, represents the Mediterranean Sea, while the roof – shaped like a dragon's back – pays homage to the legend of Saint George, or Sant Jordi.

Inside, you'll find rooms that look like sea caves with wavy walls and ceilings. The natural light flows through the building thanks to a central light well covered in blue tiles, making it feel like you're under an open sky. This innovative architectural style means that Casa Batlló is more than just a house – it’s a living work of art, with barely a straight line in sight.

Practical Information

  • The audio guide is available in 15 languages (including English, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, and Dutch).
