As if that wasn't enough, the wonderful sunsets and fabulous food are other great attractions. With so much to see and do, Ibiza is an ideal destination whether you're travelling alone, or with family or friends. Read on to find out which activities are the must-do's.
The six best activities and excursions in Ibiza
1. Explore Dalt Vila
Dalt Vila (Upper Town) is the historic, walled area of the island's capital. Strolling through its cobbled streets, lined with boutiques, quaint restaurants, art galleries and whitewashed houses adorned with colourful bougainvillea is a must-do activity in Ibiza. Pass through the Portal de ses Taules, and enjoy exploring this interesting fortified area, which has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head to the highest part, where the cathedral of Santa María La Mayor is located, and admire the sublime views over the city and the sea.
2. Visit Ibiza's picturesque villages
Venture into the heart of Ibiza and visit Santa Gertrudis, a cute village famous for its relaxed atmosphere, craft shops and delicious local food. Es Cubells, a tiny village perched on the edge of a high cliff, is also worth a visit, not least for the spectacular views of the Mediterranean. Other towns not to be missed are Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Carles de Peralta and Santa Agnés de Corona.
3. Go shopping at a hippy market
Hippy markets are, without a doubt, one of Ibiza's most popular attractions. As well as shopping and enjoying the bohemian atmosphere, many of them have live performances and food stalls. Punta Arabí, in Es Canar, is the largest and oldest street market on the island. Every Wednesday, on its more than 500 stalls you will find handmade clothes, costume jewellery, natural cosmetics and a host of original products. The Dalias market is another classic in Ibiza. Every Saturday, a multitude of artisans fill the gardens of Sant Carles, in the north of the island, with colour. In addition, during the summer months, a night market is also held on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.
4. Enjoy a boat trip
Hop aboard a catamaran and sail along the coast of Ibiza while you relax and soak up the sun. Some excursions go as far as the small island of Espalmador, a unique opportunity to swim off its beautiful beaches. Boat trips to the islet of Es Vedra are also popular. If you enjoy water sports, be sure to book a cruise that includes the chance to try one of the water sports, such as paddle surfing or snorkeling. On the other hand, Ibiza is famous for its spectacular sunsets, so sunset cruises and boat trips are a favorite among travellers.
5. Marvel at the landscapes of the Ses Salines Nature Park
This huge protected area, in addition to its dazzling beaches, is famous for its spectacular ponds and huge mountains of white salt. Its beauty is such that nowadays, many excursions around the island include a stop here. During your visit, you can learn about the importance of salt production to the island's economy for centuries, and discover why its wetlands are a paradise for birdwatchers.
6. Take a trip to Formentera
The island of Formentera is just a short distance from Ibiza, so it's no wonder it's one of the most popular excursions. After a short ferry ride, you can immerse yourself in the laid-back atmosphere of this small island. If you not only want to enjoy the beautiful beaches but also want to explore some of the highlights, we recommend a trip to Sant Francesc, the picturesque capital of Formentera. The spectacular views from Es Mirador and the iconic lighthouse of La Mola are also a must-see.
