Side Ancient City Highlights Tour with Temple of Apollo

Ancient Side has hardly changed since its days as a getaway for legendary lovers Antony and Cleopatra. Uncover one of southern Turkey's best-kept secrets with this tour. You'll get to snap photos by the Temple of Apollo, discover the huge Roman theatre and explore modern Side, too. As Muzaffer, one of our guides, says, ‘You'll walk all over history. On the way to the Temple of Apollo, there are glass walkways over ancient Roman streets.'Side's location on a compact little headland is as romantic as it gets. Our expert local guide will give you the lowdown on the long history of this once-busy Roman port. You'll see the marketplace where slaves were traded, the Byzantine hospital and the Vespasian Gate. Then you'll head inside either the ancient theatre, which is a sight to behold – it seated up to 20,000 spectators – or the former bathhouse, which is now a museum with a small but impressive collection of the artefacts dug up here. But one of the most-photographed spots is the Temple of Apollo. Legend says that this second-century seafront shrine was a gift from Antony to Cleopatra. And just beside it is the Temple of Athena – zoom in on the frieze of Medusa heads. Once you've explored the ruins, there'll be free time in modern Side to buy a sizzling kebab at one of the street stalls, or haggle for bargains in the backstreet bazaars. What's more, for your convenience, this is a small group tour to help you follow the guide better and avoid agglomerations.

Alanya Castle and Cave Winter Tour with Lunch

Alanya Castle and Cave Winter Tour with Lunch

A tale of two cities, Alanya is a true mix of the old and the new. It's a bustling resort that's home to a medieval castle and picturesque old town, where you'll have free time to explore. To top it off, there are visits to the Damlatas Caves and a shop where gourds are crafted into decorative lamps. Our expert local guide, Aylin, says “this tour factors in lots of different topics, so everyone will find something to catch their attention regardless of their interests. Plus, Turkish culture's on show almost the entire time, so you'll be like an expert on Turkey by the end of the tour.”With this winter tour, you'll start the day at the Damlatas Caves. Filled with stalagmites and stalactites, the cylindrical chamber within is said to cure asthma – that's not a cue to leave your inhaler at home, though. Next up is Seljuk Castle. Topping a headland jutting into the Mediterranean, it was built in the 13th century on the remnants of Roman and Byzantine castles. Explore its watchtower-studded battlements and peer through the holes from where hot oil was poured onto enemies when they were trying to invade the area. Then, you'll continue on to a craft shop where gourds are carefully carved into lamps, with great results. After lunch, the afternoon is yours. Go shopping in Alanya bazaar – market day is Friday – or relax in a café. Or go for a stroll on the gulet-crammed harbour or promenade before it's time to head back to your accommodation.

You'll glide along the coast to Kekova island and its sunken town, then visit the church of St Nicholas and the ancient city of Myra. Things to do in Alanya

The coastal city of Alanya is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey. Alongside its golden sandy beaches, like the famous Cleopatra Beach, this headliner of the Turkish Riviera has a rich history and is a proper playground for outdoorsy folk. So, whether you want to relax and sunbathe on the beach, visit cultural attractions or enjoy nature, Alanya won’t disappoint. Read on to find out which are the six activities you shouldn't miss.

Top six activities and excursions in Alanya

1. Take the cable car to Alanya Castle

Located on a hill 250 metres above sea level, the Medieval-era Alanya Castle is one of the city's must-see spots. Built on remains from the Byzantine and Roman eras, the best time to visit is at sunset. If you want to up the ante a little, go to the castle by cable car – the panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean are incredible.

2. Marvel at the region's caves

A short distance from Alanya, Dim Cave is one of the country's most fascinating natural attractions. During tours of the cave, you can marvel at all the different stalagmites and stalactites, as well as the small lake inside. Another must-see cave is Damlataş, famous for its fresh air that’s said to be beneficial for people with asthma. Also, if you travel to Alanya during the hot summer months, visiting a cave like this is a great way to escape the high temperatures for a bit.

3. Take a cruise along the coast of Alanya

Admire the Alanya skyline, dominated by the Red Tower and Medieval castle, as you head out on the water to soak up the magic of the Mediterranean. There are lots of different types of cruises you can choose from, all of which give you the opportunity to relax and sunbathe on board, as well as swim and snorkel in the sea. Whether you're looking for a party alternative or a quieter option, fun is pretty much always guaranteed.

4. Explore Sapadere Canyon

The 4x4 tours of the Sapadere Canyon are one of the most fun activities you can do in Alanya. Exploring this natural wonder, with its photo-worthy rock formations and rich flora, is a must-do experience for adventure lovers. Ogle the towering cliffs, snap pictures of the beautiful waterfalls, hike along the marked routes, and end the day with a refreshing swim in the natural pools.

5. Take a trip to the old town of Side

Located halfway between Antalya and Alanya, the ancient city of Side is one of the most important cultural attractions in the region. This archaeological site has a bunch of places of interest, like the amphitheatre, which used to be able to hold over 20,000 spectators, and the archaeological museum, which you’ll find in the ancient baths. But, without a doubt, the headliner here is the Temple of Apollo, built in the Second Century BC. According to legend, it was a gift from Mark Antony to Cleopatra.

6. Enjoy a boat ride through the Green Canyon

Leave the beautiful beaches of Alanya behind for a day and uncover the natural beauty of the Oymapinar Reservoir. Enjoy a relaxing cruise through the Green Canyon, and admire the massive rock formations around the gorge as you sail along the waterway here. During the tour, on top of taking in the beautiful views and sunbathing on board, you can also go for a refreshing dip.

Plan your visit to Alanya

When is the best time to travel to Alanya?

With 300 days of sunshine a year, Alanya is one of Turkey's most popular beach destinations. From May to September, good weather is practically guaranteed, with July and August being the warmest months. If you fancy doing some outdoor activities on top of going to the beach, June and September are ideal, since the temperature’s usually at the perfect level to enjoy both the sea and explore the natural and cultural landmarks nearby.

How many days do you need to visit Alanya?

To explore the city's highlights, three days might be enough. However, considering the cultural and natural attractions in the surrounding area, you should ideally stay for at least a week. So, in addition to relaxing on the beach and visiting Alanya's top attractions, you'll have time to take a trip to Sapadere Canyon, marvel at the stalactites in Dim Cave, or travel back in time during a trip to Side.

What are the best beaches in Alanya?

The coast of Alanya and its surroundings are dotted with beautiful beaches. One of the most famous is, without a doubt, Cleopatra Beach. Nestled close to the city centre, it’s said that its crystal-clear waters and golden sand won over the Egyptian queen herself, hence its name. Not far away, Damlataş Beach is also a very popular stretch of sand. In addition to having a lot of facilities nearby, it’s also really close to Damlataş Cave. After relaxing on the beach, you can take the opportunity to visit this natural wonder. A little further afield, about 25 kilometres from Alanya, Incekum is another great beach option – its shallow waters make it a firm favourite with families.
