Nat Geo Day Tour: The Fascinating World of Bees

Your introduction to this fascinating world begins at the Bee Museum of Rhodes, featuring engaging interactive exhibits. Learn about the importance of beekeeping as your National Geographic-trained guide explains the history of maintaining colonies of bees and their hives in the South Aegean islands. Watch bustling beehive life through transparent observation hives and discover intriguing facts about pollination and apitherapy—the medicinal use of bee products. You'll also learn various simple ways to protect these creatures so crucial to our planet's ecosystem. National Geographic travelers will then enjoy an exclusive, live demonstration of honey extraction by one of the Bee Museum staff in a private room. Learn about professional techniques like honeycomb scratching and the use of tools such as manual extractors to fill empty jars. Afterwards, you'll be able to sample the freshly extracted honey in a dedicated space exclusively available to National Geographic groups. Try other types of honey, too, including varieties like pine, thyme and erica. Plus, try the famous Melekouni, a traditional sweet snack from Rhodes. After the tasting, don a protective suit and take a look at an active apiary, examining the open hive with an experienced beekeeper. Surrounded by happy buzzing, you'll learn about important tools, such as frames, smokers and scrapers, as well as gain a practical understanding of how bee colonies are organized. Leave with a new understanding of the humble honeybee and what you can do to protect it.

Lindos Acropolis & Rhodes Old Town Highlights Tour

Few islands in Greece can match the heritage of Rhodes. And this wealth forms the centrepiece of this tour. Discover it all with an expert local guide. Dimitris, one of our guides, says, ‘Lindos was built in the 10th century BC by the Dorians. It's the third-most visited site in all of Greece, which shows just how significant it is.' You'll also enjoy a walking tour of the old town of Rhodes and see the Palace of the Grand Master. Headsets allow direct connection between you and your guide.Dimitris believes Rhodes is blessed with some of the best scenery in Greece. He says, ‘Lindos lies near a fantastic sandy beach, surrounded by hills hiding the village, protecting the place from the attacks of the pirates. On top of the small sugar cube houses stands the ancient Acropolis and the Temple of Athena.' You'll get to appreciate these very views during a coffee stop at a typical family-run café. Climb to the mountaintop Acropolis as your guide brings to life the myths and legends of the ancients as you take in views of St Paul's Bay below.Rounding off the day, we'll head to the old town Rhodes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – for a guided tour. Because so much of the excursion is walking, it reduces the activity's carbon footprint. Wander the winding, cobbled streets, lined with historic houses and boutiques, and walk down the Street of the Knights. The star attraction is the Palace of the Grand Master – an enormous 13th-century fortress originally built by the Knights of St John.

Pirates of Rhodes Family-friendly Themed Cruise

Pirate Tim and Calypso the Parrot need your help to find their lost treasure. But first you need to be fully trained in all the skills you need to become a pirate. Eleni, one of our local crew members, says, 'Rhodes was once a hugely important trading post in the Mediterranean region, and pirates were a real threat to this success. The island's governors directed the Rhodes Navy to spend all their time policing the waters nearby in order to protect the ships carrying valuable goods such as salt and olive oil.' You'll join our plucky crew in search of the booty, and along the way everyone will get into the pirate spirit with some help from the pirate team on the boat. There'll be lots of fun activities for everyone to get involved with. For our little pirate crew, there'll be face painting and lots of pirate-themed games to play and for the older pirate crew, there'll be some pirate challenges to join in with. And no pirate adventure would be complete without a treasure map and clues to follow.Eleni says, 'Set sail with the pirates for a fun cruise with plenty to keep the kids occupied while the grown-ups can relax and admire the scenery. We'll stop at some lovely spots so all the pirates can cool off with a swim in the sea.' Fruit is included, plus there's a bar on board where you can buy drinks and snacks, in case all the excitement makes you hungry. What to do in Rhodes

Rhodes is a popular vacation destination, perfect for families as well as couples or friends traveling together. Culture, nature, and gastronomy are available on this beautiful Greek island, satisfying everyone. Renowned for its sandy beaches and turquoise sea, archaeological sites, and natural landscapes, Rhodes offers experiences to suit all preferences. As if that weren't enough, the island is strategically located, making it ideal for island-hopping and exploring some of the hidden gems of the Aegean Sea.

6 best things to do in Rhodes:

  1. Explore Rhodes' Old Town This UNESCO World Heritage site is a genuine open-air museum. Enclosed within 14th-century walls built by the Knights of Rhodes, the Old Town will captivate you with its narrow streets and medieval architecture. Don't miss the Grand Master's Palace, almost completely rebuilt in the 20th century, and the Knights' Street, the most famous and atmospheric street in the Old Town. If you have time, take a walk up to Agios Stéfanos Mountain, on which stands an ancient acropolis and from which you can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views.

  2. Visit the archaeological site of Camiro (Kamiros) Kamiros was one of the three city-states of ancient Rhodes and is a very impressive archaeological site. The ruins are less than an hour's drive from Rhodes town and, despite dating mainly from the 3rd century B.C., they are still beautifully preserved. Stunning views of Rhodes' west coast can be seen from the Acropolis at the top of the hill.

  3. Take an excursion to the Butterfly Valley If you travel to Rhodes during the summer, be sure to plan an excursion to the Butterfly Valley, which during the warmer months is filled with different species of butterflies. The valley is lush and unspoiled, a place where you can stroll among waterfalls and streams, enjoying the fresh air and admiring its colorful inhabitants. Covering some 60 hectares, the valley is a stone's throw away from the town center and is one of the most fascinating attractions in the northern part of the island.

  4. Admire the Acropolis of Lindos Moving further south, on Rhodes' east coast, lies one of the island's most famous attractions: the Acropolis of Lindos. Perched on a hilltop, a visit to the site offers beautiful panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and St. Paul's Bay. Admire the ancient ruins, which include a Doric temple dedicated to Athena, a Byzantine church, and the medieval castle built by the Knights of St. John.

  5. Take a day trip to the island of Simi Spend a day exploring the nearby island of Simi, north of Rhodes, which can be reached in a couple of hours by ferry. Here you'll find wild pebble beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the port town of Simi, famous for its neoclassical buildings and pastel-colored houses. The Monastery of Panormitis, in the homonymous bay, is the highlight of the island, famous for its Baroque bell tower.

  6. Taste the local cuisine No visit to Rhodes is complete without trying its delightful cuisine. Dine in a traditional Greek taverna and try 'lacan', made with goat and chickpeas, or go to a seafood restaurant to sample the fresh catch of the day, accompanied by ouzo or retsina, an aromatic wine. Don't forget to try 'mezedes', small dishes similar to Spanish tapas designed for sharing, a great way to try many different local specialties.

Get ready to visit Rhodes

What is the best time to visit Rhodes?

It is always a good time to visit Rhodes. Summers are long, running from May to September, winters are mild, although rather rainy, while autumn and spring are the perfect seasons for those seeking tranquillity and wanting to avoid the high season. The best months to enjoy a beach climate but skip the flocks of tourists are April, May and September.

How many days do you need to visit Rhodes?

Considering that the island is not very big, to visit Rhodes Old Town, one of the main archaeological sites and take a dip in the beautiful beaches, three days may be enough. But to take your time and enjoy a holiday of relaxation and cultural visits, we suggest staying in Rhodes for at least a week.

What are Rhodes' best beaches?

Agathi Beach, also known as Golden Beach for the golden colour of its sand, is considered the most beautiful beach in Rhodes and is ideal for families. Agios Pavlos, in Lindos, has a wild charm and crystal-clear waters. South of the island, Prassanossi Beach is great for those who enjoy water sports, especially kitesurfing and windsurfing. Finally, Tsampika Beach, with its 2 km of fine sand, promises unforgettable moments of relaxation.
