Discover the city of Matera in an articulated route through its baroque churches, the Civita district, and the two famous Sassi districts, Barisano and Caveoso!
Begin your tour from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where you'll be introduced to the UNESCO World Heritage city. Walking towards the historical heart of the city, you will encounter the beautiful church of San Giovanni Battista, built in Apulian Romanesque style. The tour continues with a visit to the Casa Cava, an underground environment formerly used as a tuff quarry and now used as an auditorium and conference center thanks to exceptional restoration work. You will then arrive in the Rione Sasso Barisano, to access the rock church of Sant'Antonio Abate.
Continues in Sasso Caveoso for a visit to a typically furnished cave-house. During the tour you will cross Via Madonna delle Virtù, the picturesque road overlooking the canyon, crossing Porta Pistola. Walk along via Bruno Buozzi and reach Madonna delle Grazie, another important rock church. Arrive in Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi where you will visit the church dedicated to the saint, and then get to Piazza del Sedile, the seat of Parliament during the domination of the Kingdom of Naples. Your tour ends with a visit to the magnificent Cathedral that dominates the highest part of the city.
