Discovered during a well excavation in 1709, the ancient Herculaneum was a Roman town boasting beautiful sea-facing terraces and opulent Otium Villas. The Bourbons initiated excavations through tunnel construction, many of which remain visible today. However, much of the city still lies buried. Your expert guides will walk you through the intact structures, vivid mosaics and frescoes, allowing you to admire remarkably preserved wooden doors and staircases. They'll also guide you to the ancient beach where the casts of victims' skeletons are on display.
But there's more. You'll journey to a cooking experience via the grand royal palace of Portici, immersing yourself in Neapolitan culinary traditions. Starting with a welcome aperitif featuring typical Campanian products, you'll have fun learning all the secrets of creating delectable traditional Neapolitan dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Join your guide, a specialist in Roman archaeology, to tour the home of the Gladiator school of Ancient Rome where the legendary gladiator Spartacus made his daring escape and ignited his revolt against Roman slavery.Upon leaving the army, Spartacus was sold into slavery. He was ordered to go to Capua to enroll in Gladiator training school, where he rebelled against his enslavement and managed to escape alongside several other trainee gladiators. He became the leader of the growing group of escaped slaves who were ready to fight for freedom and autonomy.
