Fuerteventura Villages and Volcanoes Small Group Tour

Inland Fuerteventura is all volcanic craters and barren mountains. On this small-group tour, you'll venture into the heart of the island for a glimpse of its impressive volcanic formations, with stops along the way in Ajuy, Betancuria and Pajara. Fran, one of our local guides, says, ‘The story of modern Fuerteventura began in Betancuria. It was founded in 1404 by French explorer Jean de Béthencourt after he conquered the island from the aborigines, and it has the oldest church in the Canaries.'

Travelling in eight-seater minivans, you'll be able to access narrow roads and country tracks that big coaches can't reach. There's a scenic mountain road drive between Betancuria and Pajara, with a pit stop along the way to take photos at Las Peñitas viewpoint. Your guide will give you the lowdown on Fuerteventura as you contemplate its eroded mountains, desolate lava fields and isolated villages.

Highlights include the Vallebron viewpoint and the west-coast fishing village of Ajuy, which is where Jean de Béthencourt first landed. You can visit the volcanic caves here – the oldest natural formations in the Canary Islands – or relax on its black-sand beach. You'll also visit Betancuria, all charming, cobbled streets of whitewashed homes. Other star turns include the triple lighthouse of El Cotillo and the sand dunes of Corralejo. To top it off, a traditional Canarian lunch, made from locally sourced ingredients, is served at a family-owned restaurant in the remote hamlet of Valle Santa Ines.
