Relax on the couch and enjoy the drive to the most authentic area of Tuscany, with its medieval towns and postcard landscapes. The tour begins in San Gimignano, the so-called “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” due to the high ancient towers that stand out along the city center. Step back in time while you wander through its cobblestone streets and let the stunning views of the surrounding hills amaze you.
The second stop is the town of Alabaster: the scenic Volterra in all its medieval charm. Perched on top of a hill, from Volterra you will enjoy a breathtaking view. Make sure not to miss the Palace of Priors, the Medici Fortress, or the Etruscan Museum, which is one of the oldest public museums in Europe. Before leaving, don’t forget to browse around the plenty of artisan workshops.
Your final stop is the mysterious San Galgano Abbey, just about an hour's drive from Volterra. Of the 13th Century Cistercian abbey, only the walls remain: it is empty and roofless and above it only the sky. Prepare to travel with your imagination as you step inside and let the grandeur of the Gothic architecture inspire you. If you love myths and legends this is the place to be: step back to the court of King Arthur and you will find yourselves standing before the real Sword in the Stone.
