That's why the great merchant lords, the pepper sacks, and also the common Nuremberg city folk repeatedly invested enormously in the city's fortifications and modernized them. For centuries, Nuremberg was one of the best-protected cities in Europe as a result. The walls and bastions were so powerful that the mere sight of them protected them against attacks. Even Wallenstein preferred not to attack Nuremberg directly because the city walls with their bastions and underground passages, thick round towers and battlements and kennels intimidated him.
